Wisdom from the past

I received this one from a friend via e-mail today. Thought I'd share it here because the quote could easily be said in this day and age.

The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest we become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.

While that's true for the most part, the last part isn't true in all cases. Not everyone lives on "public assistance" because they don't want to work. Some people would love to work but nobody will employ them for some reason (e.g. disabilities) or there aren't enough jobs to go around where they live.
